Walking is the best way to discover the center

Allow chance to take you on a special adventure: let your feet lead you! Once you have taken a bus to a central area (even Termini Station will do), go for a little jaunt of your own. Do not worry, there is no chance you will not come across some beautiful hidden treasure... after all, this is Rome! Here are a few tips if you want to try this one out! If you get a bus to Termini Station (most routes connect there), be sure to move away from that area as it can be rather dingy. Only a few steps down Via Cavour will take you past the Basilica of Saint Mary Major and deep into the beautiful Esquilino area. Go on an adventure down the narrow cobbled streets, stop in one of the quaint little wine bars or extraordinarily cheap restaurants! If you go back onto Via Cavour you will come to Via dei Fori Imperiali, the sweeping boulevard which connects the Colosseum to Piazza Venezia. From Piazza Venezia you can take the Corso (where all the shops are!) and walk down to Piazza del Popolo. All the surrounding area is extraordinary and just waiting to be explored.

Traveling by Public transportation

Rome 's Metro (subway) system is very good. The bus network is extensive and buses run frequently.

TIP: buses are rarely equipped with the machine which sells tickets, so buy them BEFORE you board the bus and remember to validate them as soon as you get on (fines are high!).

The four main Ticket types:

B.I.T. € 1.00. Standard ticket, valid for one Metro ride or 75 minutes on all buses.
B.I.G. € 4.00. Daily ticket, valid for unlimited metro, bus, and train travel within the Comune di Roma. This includes Ostia, but not Fiumicino airport or Tivoli.
B.T.I. €11.00. 3-day tourist ticket, valid for everything listed under the B.I.G ticket.
C.I.S. €16.00. Weekly ticket, valid for everything listed under the B.I.G. ticket

You can find the tickets (ask for a biglietto, pronunced billietto):

- at the approximately 2,000 businesses, which include tobacconists, newsagents, bars, stationers, in Rome and Latium (except for annual passes)
- in Rome, at the 300 automatic distributors (MEB) located in the municipal territory and installed at the main terminals and underground railway stations (except for monthly and annual passes)

TIP: however, they rarely work or often don't return your change, so you are best purchasing tickets in newsagents and tobacconist.

- at company outlets (all kinds of tickets and passes)
- at the outlets located at railway stations throughout the territory of Rome and of Latium (all kinds of tickets and passes)

The Metro system has two lines: A and B, they cross at Termini.

By Taxi

Always take the official white or yellow taxi's. Look if the meter starts at 0. The minimum price at the moment is 2,32 Euro. For luggage and at night you pay an extra fee.

Hire a bike or a scooter

For 10 Euro you can hire a bike for a day, but be warned! The Romans are not very familiair with bikes on the road, so you have to be careful.
For about 40 Euro you can hire a scooter. You have to be older than 15, with a drivers licence. You have to wear a helmet.
If you are not an experienced scooter driver don't start to practice in Rome! The busy traffic will be too much to handle...

Hire a Car

Italy is famous for it's crazy drivers. So driving a car in Rome will be a challenge! Also the numerous one-way streets, and the non-parking centre are something to think about before you decide to hire a car.
You can't hire a car below 21, and you should always ensure the car fully. You can find most of the car renting company's at Fiumicino airport and Termini station.
